How It’s Made At Kente Kingdom

CLOTH SPECIFICATION

The quintessential characteristics of Kente dictates the blueprint of the COMMISSIONED Atelier service. The understanding of Kente cloth is crucial in the deliverance, and acceptance of its distinctive yet meticulous beauty. The design specifications - often narrated through the confinements of strict weaving rules, is one which must be valued in order to appreciate the true mastery of indigenous craftsmanship, so lets get familiar with the cloth specifications.

Authentic Kente Cloth is traditionally handwoven in strips using narrow horizontal handlooms, true to the ancient West African experience of cloth construction.  These strips measuring between 4-6 inches wide, are then sewn together to create full cloths or sets - a weaving technique dating back to the 11th century. Our unisex one-piece cloth measures 8 feet wide and 12 feet long on average, and can be woven in any colour combination and design specification of choice.  The one, two or three-piece female sets vary in size, ranging from five to twelve combined strips averaging 6 feet in length per cloth.  This may consist of one plainly woven cloth and an additional one or two ‘Kente’ cloths which allow for infinite creativity in garment design, innovation and style combination. The dense and weighty nature of Kente is typically woven using silk, cotton or wool and at times, woven with additional yarn combinations of rayon or polyester to give your customised kente a silky look, and a pristine sheen & finish.

DISCOVER COLOUR AND DESIGN

Colour and design is where one gets creative but first, it’s worth noting that Kente patterns have names and meanings - as does the cloth in its entirety. Crucially, colour plays a vital role in the symbolic reference and conversational connections between the wearer and its audience, so take a look at our blog Kente Diaries, where we highlight the use of colour and its cultural significance in the article Kente Cloth; A Colourful Conversation. We believe this will influence your colour selection whilst challenging your creative flare, to commission a cloth consciously driven in thought, design and end-use, a cloth coded with personal themes - your very own story telling experience in fashion form.
